Protest group, Catholic Women’s Ordination has taken out £10,000 of ad space on London buses for a month starting August 30th – the Pope arrives in the UK on September 16 and will spend two days in the city.
The slogan “Pope Benedict Ordain Women Now” will appear on 10 buses which includes routes that will pass Westminster Cathedral and Westminster Hall – both which appear on the Catholic leaders itinerary.
Last week the Vatican issued a document that apparently equated paedophilia with women priests, stating that “attempted ordination of a woman” to the priesthood was one of the most serious crimes in church law.
A Vatican official subsequently clarified its position, saying the crimes were of a different nature and gravity.
London buses have previously been the stage for similar religious campaigning. Last year tit for tat god ads appeared on buses. Atheists raised £150,000 to advertise: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”. The Christian Party then took out ad space saying: “There definitely is a God. So join the Christian Party and enjoy your life”.
CWO spokesperson Pat Brown said that a press conference would be held during the papal visit at which the group would make its case for ordaining women.
“We love the church and don’t want to be disruptive. We are trying to get support and would love to have five minutes with the pope. We are very concerned about what is going on in the church at the moment.”
