Government plan to end abuse of women and girls – major success for EVAW coalition

EVAW is celebrating a major success today as the UK Government publishes its plan to tackle all forms of violence against women including rape, domestic violence, trafficking, and forced marriage. EVAW members attended the launch of Together We Can End Violence Against Women and Girls: A Strategy by the Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, and Ministers from other government departments at Lancaster House last night.

We have long campaigned for coordinated government action as a vital step towards the government fulfilling its human rights obligations. In recent years we have attracted support for our campaign of the Conservatives, Lib Dems as well as the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

We warmly welcome the focus on stopping the problem before it starts by putting gender equality and violence against women on the national schools curriculum and public campaigns to change attitudes. However, the strategy must be properly resourced, particularly funding for frontline women’s services so that women no longer face a postcode lottery when seeking support after violence. See coverage of the strategy in the Guardian and on the BBC.

Help us spread the word about this victory for women’s rights throughout the 16 days of action for the elimination of violence against women, which lasts from today until International Human Rights Day on 10th December. We are urging our members, activists, campaigners and all who support women’s right to live free from the threat and reality of violence to support the strategy by:
- writing to local and national newspapers
- blogging
- taking part in radio phone-ins
- linking to the strategy on your website, Myspace or Facebook page and Twitter updates!
