The 25th November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women.

Throughout the 16 Days of Action we’re asking everyone to take a stand against domestic violence by supporting our work to keep women safe from abuse in their own homes.

You can show your support today by making a donation to our 16 Days of Action Appeal. This year, we are looking to raise at least £6,000 for our work to protect women and children from domestic violence: that’s £1 for each woman supported by our network of local member organisations over the course of the 16 days.

Sadly, in the same time period, 5 women will be killed by an abusive partner or ex-partner. By making a donation towards our 16 Days of Action Appeal you can help us to reach out to those at risk, and to prevent further needless deaths as a result of domestic violence.

Take My Hand

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Women’s Aid are releasing ‘Take My Hand’, a charity single to raise money for our work to end domestic violence. Performed by 13 year old Olivia, a rising star with an incredible voice, and Natasha Benjamin, herself a survivor of domestic violence, the single offers a message of hope for both women and children experiencing domestic violence. All profits from sales of the single will be used by Women’s Aid to support and protect abused women and children. Please show your support by downloading the single, and encouraging all your friends to do the same. With your help, we can make sure that the single reaches as many people as possible.

Take My Hand will be available to download from the 25 November!

16 Fundraising Ideas

The 16 days of action, between 25th November and 10th December, are the perfect time to take action against domestic violence. Why not pick one of our 16 fundraising ideas and hold an event for Women’s Aid or help raise awareness of domestic violence.

1. Do a sponsored run for Women’s Aid.
There are a number of races taking place all over the country from the Great Winter 5k Run in Edinburgh, to the Bath Half Marathon and the first ever Brighton Marathon. Take a look at our events calendar and sign up now to run for Women’s Aid.

2. Find the hidden treasure
Organise a treasure hunt and ask everyone to donate 50p or £1 at each clue they find – by the time they reach the treasure there will be plenty of “treasure” to donate to Women’s Aid too.

3. Wear a Women’s Aid T-shirt
Buy a “You can’t beat a women” T-shirt and show your support for Women’s Aid.

4. Quiz Night
Get clued up and organize a quiz night in aid of Women’s Aid at your local pub, club or even at the office.

5. Turn old mobiles and printer cartridges into cash
Recycle your unwanted mobile phones and printer cartridges, and Reclaim-it will donate up to £6 for each laser toner or inkjet cartridge and up to £24 for each mobile to Women’s Aid. Contact Gillian for more information.

6. Set up book club
Take it in turns to choose a book, then get together to discuss the book once you have read it. Make sure you take some nibbles and a donation for Women’s Aid, and have fun!

7. Search the web with Everyclick
Search the web with Everyclick.com and donate to Women’s Aid for free. Everyclick.com gives a small donation to Women’s Aid every time you use it to search the web!

8. Make your own jewellery
Handmade jewellery makes a great Christmas gift. Why not make your own necklaces and bracelets to sell to your friends with the proceeds going to Women’s Aid?

9. Cake sale
Get baking and sell cakes to friends and colleagues for a donation to Women’s Aid.

10. Dress Down Day
Hold a dress down day or even a fancy dress day at your office, school or university. Ask everyone to pay £1 to be able to wear casual clothes or a silly outfit for the day.

11. Contact your local school
Ask your local school to use our new education toolkit in their classrooms to teach children and young people about domestic violence, how they can get help if they are experiencing abuse, and what they should expect in a healthy relationship.

12. Challenge of a lifetime
Whether you’re male or female, young or old, you can experience the trip of a lifetime whilst also raising essential funds for Women’s Aid by taking part in an overseas challenge. Expeditions include include treks, mountain bike rides, mountain climbs, white water rafting, sailing and horse riding.

13. Volunteer in your local area.
Some local Women’s Aid groups run regional helplines, so you might like to contact a Women’s Aid domestic violence service or refuge in the area where you live to see if they have any volunteering opportunities available.
