Renfrewshire Women’s Association Conference 2009
This year’s conference will be held on the 25th November 2009 in the Paisley Town Hall. Our theme this year is empowerment and the barriers that stop women from participating as full member of our society.
The Conference starts Renfrewshire’s 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women which runs until the 10th December.
BACKGROUND
In December 1999 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 25th November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and called for the worldwide organisation of activities on that day to raise awareness of the issue. The date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the death on 25th November 1960 of the three Mirabal sisters who were killed in the Dominican Republic for their political activism and outspoken resistance to the regime at that time. This date begins the 16 Days of Action which ends on 10th December.
WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN
During the 16 Days of Action, white ribbons are worn to symbolise the support for the elimination of violence against women. The first white ribbon campaign was launched in 1991 by a group of men in Canada after the brutal mass shooting of 14 young women students at the University of Montreal. The first white ribbon day was launched in the UK in 1998. White ribbons are now worn worldwide to symbolise support for the elimination of violence against women.
