The public has an opportunity on Friday November 27, 2pm – 4pm at Truro Crown Court to find out how justice is delivered.
A free interactive sentencing event called ‘You Be The Judge’ will focus on domestic abuse cases and will offer an opportunity to understand the specialist processes for these offences as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Week.
Tracy Easton, Chief Crown Prosecutor and chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board said: “Events like ‘You Be The Judge’ provide a valuable opportunity for community members to engage with the criminal justice system and increase their understanding of decision making factors in Magistrates’ sentencing in these Courts. We hope events like this will increase the public’s knowledge of the criminal justice system and encourage those who are the victims of crime to come forward with confidence.”
Details of cases will be read out and the audience will then use keypads to vote on the sentence they feel is most appropriate for each crime.
The true outcomes of each case will then be revealed and explained by magistrates, giving a behind-the-scenes insight into the role of magistrates and the justice system. All cases are real, but with key elements changed to protect the identities of those involved.
A member of the Magistrates’ Court legal team and magistrates will then talk through why the sentence was given, explaining what options are available for each crime and what factors are taken into consideration and why.
Those wishing to attend should contact the Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board events hotline on 01392 452594, or email LCJB2@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk to secure their place.
