West Hampstead Women’s Centre has been working for over 25 years to empower women to fulfil their potential and encourage them to play a full role in shaping their lives. WHWC offers a range of support groups, alternative therapies, classes and volunteering opportunities to raise health awareness, reduce isolation and develop confidence and skills.
The Centre has a long history of volunteer involvement, currently 14 women volunteer at the centre in a variety of capacities. The history of the centre is one of a striking diversity of work supported by local women, many of them refugees, working for their communities as volunteers. Many of the women accessing the centre are elderly, disabled and the majority of service users are from BME communities. Women who use the centre know that it is a safe space where they will find help and a warm welcome with total confidentiality. In return they are part of the centre’s family and that sense of belonging helps them to contribute to community life.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the WHWC team and to set up and co-ordinate a new volunteering project. The Volunteer Development Worker’s responsibilities will include: setting up the Volunteer Scheme and Volunteer Development Programme; developing the Volunteer Handbook; recruiting, inducting and supervising new volunteers; publicising the project and networking with relevant agencies; and reviewing current volunteering policies and procedures at the Centre.
You will have experience of volunteer co-ordination and management, and have an excellent knowledge and understanding of volunteering issues. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to understand and take responsibility for a complex workload are essential as is the ability to work well with a diverse range of people. Excellent spoken and written English, and good IT skills also essential. Post open to women only, S.7(2)(d) and (e) of Sex Discrimination Act apply.
