Europe and Saudi Arabia Active Students Partnership

The civil society organisation European Alternatives is launching a project with Effat College, a women’s higher education institution based in Jeddah, and the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue with the aim of promoting inter-cultural dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Europe, focussing on university students. As part of this project, a training manual will be produced for young people on inter-cultural dialogue. Given an increasingly interconnected world where crucial cultural and political issues cross all borders, the training manual aims to equip young people with the skills to navigate these areas. The training manual will be written by students from both countries. This project is supported by the British and Saudi Foreign Ministries and the British Council.

European Alternatives is looking for twelve active students from European universities to participate in writing this training manual. There will be six sections to the manual, with at least two students (one European, one Saudi) writing each section together, who will be put in contact to decide on the content of the sections. There will be sections on student governance, women in education, citizenship and art and culture. The manual is scheduled to be finished by June. There will be workshops around the themes of the manual in the UK, and the possibility for some of the European participants to visit to Saudi Arabia later this year.

The project will involve students from both public and private universities in Riyadh and Jeddah.

Participation will be of particular relevance to those with an interest in Saudi Arabian society and culture, student governance, and women’s issues.

This project is the first step in more substantive relations between universities, academics and students in Europe and Saudi Arabia.
