The future of a centre that provides support for sexual assault victims is in doubt after its rent rocketed.
Hull Rape Crisis has just weeks to find new premises before its lease runs out.
The charity, based at The Rainbow Centre in Wheeler Street, west Hull, helps more than 100 women in East Yorkshire every year and staff are desperate to keep the service running.
The organisation provides free, confidential help to victims of rape, sexual assault or childhood sexual abuse, with face-to-face counselling or via the telephone.
Helen Moore, co-ordinator at Hull Rape Crisis, said: “Often victims of rape or abuse have never told anyone about their experience.
“Hull Rape Crisis is a real lifeline to our clients. It will be devastating for them if we can no longer provide them with emotional support.”
Hull Rape Crisis rents an office and a counselling room from the West Hull Women’s Centre, on the second floor of the Rainbow Centre.
The Women’s Centre has asked the organisation to pay £600 a month, instead of the current rate of £347 a month, from April 1.
A spokeswoman for West Hull Women’s Centre said the increase was necessary due to rises in utility bills and the fact Hull Rape Crisis now used the building on a full-time basis.
Staff are appealing to Mail readers to come forward with suggestions for a new location. Ms Moore said: “We’re not expecting to find anywhere for free, but we need somewhere that is reasonably priced.”
Hull Rape Crisis has 14 counsellors – two full-time and 12 part-time volunteers.
Ms Moore holds the only funded post at the charity and said the money to pay her salary was due to run out in April.
