For this concert we have 5 wonderful singers – ranging from Rosie Vorou-Hunter, who is 9, to Rena Stamou, who is 70-something, and Eleni Dimopoulou, Cigdem Aslan and Kalia Baklitzanaki in-between.
Rena Stamou sang with the great rebetiko performers of the 1940s-50s, including Tsitsanis, Mitsakis, Kazantzidis and Tsaousakis. She now divides her time between London and Greece, and still has an active recording and performing career, well into her 70s. She has been described as “the last of the rebetisses”. It is a great honour to have her performing here in London with us. A rare appearance not to be missed.
The singers will be accompanied by musicians from the Famous SOAS Rebetiko Band. Performing songs from the Rebetiko repertoire. Followed by a Sunday afternoon jam session. A perfect way to chase out the February blues.
